Air Pressure by CZ Energy Management

I have a pretty good short story for anyone interested.

This past year "winter" we have answered calls for no heat residential customers. On two of these calls the gas furnace would not come on. So the tech would trouble shoot by jumping out sensors on the furnace to see if they were malfunctioning.

All sensors were working. However when placing the hand near the intake at the flue you could feel a large draft pushing in "not out" for CO gases to vent. Come to find out, in the back room of the house the owner would have a cannabis grow operation. In that room a large charcoal ventilation system "motor" was installed. This is to reduce the cannabis smell and vent it outdoors. This ventilation system was approx 1000 CFM.

On many new and not so old gas furnaces a pressure switch is installed "safety"  is installed at the flue. If the furnace cannot vent or sees to much pressure it will not fire up. So these growers are not considering health and safety. Big surprise right! Turn off the charcoal vent motor and the furnace would come on. So do you want heat or the smell of cannabis?

Radon Testing by CZ Energy Management

You never really understand how important Radon can effect your health. Most property owners never have their property tested for Radon.

As a building analyst firm and licensed inspection company we felt the need to test levels of radon. So we purchased electronic equipment that provides accurate data within 48 hours. Also I will post facts on this post to help better understand what radon will do to you. Also im a prime example having been a cancer patient.

Below is the test results of our home. Remember EPA states that at 4 Pci/L "picoCuries per liter" a structure should have abatement. Any measurements above 4 Pci/L "picoCuries per liter" is consider dangerous.

Facts Not Fiction by CZ Energy Management

As we see more and more commercial LED lighting up-grades being installed for parking lots, we also see serious mistakes.

Car Lots: We do not know if it is low cost or just cheap spending that is driving business owners to install poor grade LED equipment. Or it could be the installing company simply does not understand light on the ground, light spread, reflective light! Rarely do we see complete lighting evaluations being conducted. What we do see is building owners now purchasing whatever is available on the internet or suggested by their electricians and not lighting experts. Not all LED fixtures are created equal! Diodes "chips", optics, color, drivers, wattage's & voltage. Light measurements before and after.

As more and more LED equipment being available on the market prices have declined. Also quality has dropped. Our company prides ourselves on how much light we can provide to the customer, meaning more light on the ground and not in the air.

As existing HID 1000 watt is common for parking lots. When the bulb was new it would provide approx 50 foot candles from 20 feet off the ground. In ever case we always exceed the existing foot candles with our retro fit LEDs 285 watt. An existing 1000 watt HID will decline in less than a year, was 50 foot candles and one year later 32. Going from bright 5000 K to yellow 3500 K.

The next thing we see as we drive past these car lots at night is low light. This is after the install of new LEDs. This is giving LEDs a bad rap. The customer doesn't know because they have placed there trust into the hands of there best friend "the electrician". We hear it all the time from the owner. I have my own electrical contractor! In other words they do not need a professional building analyst that has the tools and knowledge. If only business owners would listen and take a look at our LED lighting installs before making that decision, then perhaps less mistakes would not be made. I've never met more closed minded business owners in my life until I moved to the Pacific Northwest.

I think it is great that business owners are spending money to up-grade to LEDs and reduce energy usage. However I could turn down my thermostat for heating and save money too. But would I be comfortable? My point is, when designed correctly the owner should receive the best light possible and benefit by saving energy. This means maximum lumen s with spread of light on the ground. Lets don't forget long lasting chips and drivers. Example: CREE chips were the best on the market a few years ago. However as we discovered other manufactures have designed even better products today. Smaller chips, less heat, better optics.

If I needed electrical work done yes I would call an electrician. However if I needed professional lighting study done I would call a professional in that field.

Car lots: Need security meaning the more light they have the less likely vandalism would take place. Car lots need for there lots to be bright so potential clients can see the colors or styles. Example: Marketing is the driving point of any product. If you the customer was driving down the street and saw two car lots on each side of the street. If one lot was dimly lit and the other was very bright, I guaranty you would pull into the lot that was brighter.

2015 LED Lighting by CZ Energy Management

2015 energy management up-grades. You will receive the best in service and products from our company. We have the proven background necessary in LED lighting and the building envelope.

Not only do we specialize in LED lighting, we also are certified in energy management. We have the experience and knowledge to evaluate commercial buildings for energy loss. This may include thermal and air barriers, HVAC duct air flow, air balancing, equipment sizing, make up air, building pressures and balancing, combustion gas appliances, mechanical equipment, etc.

When a business owner leases or purchases a building, do they know anything about the existing mechanical equipment that comes with it? Are they provided with a document that shows them all equipment and the building has been commissioned within the past year? NO.

Do they review historical electrical and gas usage? NO.

The existing equipment "backbone" of the building, is it on its last leg and may break down within the first few months? These are bottom line operating costs. Could put you out of business before you open the doors.

LED Lighting Up-Grade 1000 Watt vs 285 Watt by CZ Energy Management

As a energy management company we design, engineer,  sell & over see the installation of large scale projects each year.

We can take an existing 1000 watt pole light and reduce it to 285 watts. Provide better and more light then eliminate maintenance. Our custom design retro fit application we have been using for over three years has never failed us. Our 285 watt is a redundant lighting fixture with built in lighting control that no one else has. UL & DLC listed our clients receive cash incentives back. In addition with one of our LED fixtures it also has a built in lighting control to reduce your energy usage by 50% more during late night hours.

Most other service companies will use a single head LED to replace a 1000 watt HID. Usually they have to use 300 or 350 watts to produce enough light. While they still do not have the necessary optics to push the light to the ground, they come up short. If there driver or LED cluster fails the client is without light.

Our design has three built in modular's with three drivers. If one ever fails the client still has light from other two modular's.

While our competitor systems may over heat due to the heat sink ours has three heat sinks with three drivers. Our product has three small magnetite cooling fans to help reduce the heat load as well.

Was 1000 watt HID in each pole light with 60 watt ballast. Now, our 285 watts per pole. If you do not purchase from us, you are not receiving the best!

Different Chips by CZ Energy Management

Should you choose 5050, 3528, 3020, 3014, or some other size I have never heard about?

The size of the chip and how many chips you will need depend upon the use for which the LED strips are going to be used. We recommend doing an overview of your project and asking some main questions.

Start by deciding what you want/need the lighting for.

    1. Do you want accent lighting, principal task lighting, color changing, lighting a display case, outdoor, etc?
    2. Dimmable or non dimmable?
    3. Which color do you want?
    4. Do you require very high CRI?
    5. What brightness is needed?

When purchasing LEDs, please pay attention and compare the following:

    1. Look how many LEDs are on the reel or per foot and the total lumen (brightness) of the LED strip light
    2. Pay attention to the CRI (Color Rendering Index) - Our CRIs range between 80 - 95.
    3. How many watts does the strip use?
    4. Are the UL or ETL safety listed?
    5. Are they dimmable?
    6. How many ounces of copper do they use in their PCB to dissipate the heat? (we use 2-4oz)

Satisfied Clients by CZ Energy Management

We have conducted hundreds of installs for LED lighting up grades.

100% of our clients will say we have reduced their energy lighting usage by 75%. Our clients that have entered into our energy management program will say, we have reduce the energy usage as whole by no less than 24%.

Our track record speaks for itself.

Negative Pressures by CZ Energy Management

To understand building pressures you have to understand building science.

A building's pressure should be as close to zero as possible. This is rarely the case. Many factors contribute to pressures. Building tightness, the less holes there is in a building the better off the building is. The tighter a building, the better.

Duct systems. The tighter the duct system the better. In a high negative pressure building the greater for concern of health & safety and high energy usage. The higher positive pressure the less concern for health & safety but still higher energy bills.

Our blog regarding building evaluation. The building owners negative pressures was at -7.2. Not only was he wasting energy also the CO was being back drafted from his gas fired appliance. Any negative pressure exceeding -3 Pa "pascals" is at risk of back drafting gas fired equipment. Not only back drafting occurs it also may cause flame roll out.

Flame roll out is a term used for gas fired equipment that has burner compartments that is open to the atmosphere. Furnaces, hot water heaters, boilers.

At -7.2 pa the human body cannot feel this pressure. We use manometers to discover and measure pressures.

Within several minutes of taking measurements will provides us with enough information to start our investigation on where and what to look for.

If you review our page on building pressures this will help you understand about pressures. Pa, hpa.

Building Evaluation by CZ Energy Management

New Orleans LA.

A restaurant business owner called us in to evaluate his building. This business has many interior and exterior lighting fixtures. He had quotes from three other companies. After reviewing his utility bill we came to the conclusion it was not just lighting usage that was causing high energy usage. Upon our evaluation we found inside of his business high negative pressures. The negative pressures were being caused by several things. One being his draft hoods for the gas fired equipment were turned up to high sucking 75% of his conditioned air out. The second issue were large holes torn open in supply duct lines in the attic.  The AC units was running 24/7 trying to keep up.

This was also effecting his walk-in refrigeration units. The negative pressures were so great it was pulling open the doors by a half inch. Just enough that no one ever noticed it. The wall of the walk-in is located to the exterior wall where the refrigeration lines are coming in. Lines not sealed letting in fresh air unconditioned. So now his refrigeration compressors were also running 24/7.

We did the calculations on the amount of amps these units were using. Now it all made sense. When we did the calculations on lighting it gave us a number on KWHs used. KWHs being used for the entire building was four times greater.

If this business owner had replaced all his lighting and spent thousands of dollars he would have been very disappointed. We have many stories to tell however this one really is remembered.

Just because you think you know what the problem is may not be!

Many people are unaware of building pressures and how they can cause serious issues.
